University of Edinburgh, Peffermill Pavilion and Student Apartments, Edinburgh

The project includes a world-class sports venue, an outdoor playground and a 573-bed student apartment development. The sports venue will accommodate a large multi-functional indoor stadium, four indoor tennis courts, a conference centre, a gymnasium, a restaurant and a club. The ground floor of the student apartments will be equipped with a cinema, two piano rooms, an activity room and a laundry room. CSP provided a complete set of acoustic design services, including noise impact assessment, room acoustic design, sound insulation design and noise and vibration control.

Project Overview

CSP assessed the impact of nearby railway traffic on the proposed apartment blocks based on noise and vibration measurements. The assessment also considered the impact of the change of road traffic flow after the project is completed, and the noise from the proposed outdoor sports ground. Appropriate sound insulation design of the façade was provided according to the results of the comprehensive assessment.

CSP provided design guidance for reverberation time control of the large-scale multi-functional indoor sports stadium, as well as optimisation for other spaces. The conference room within the sports venue will be located adjacent to the gymnasia. The sound insulation design is challenging. We provided economical and appropriate sound insulation solutions. The rain noise generated by the proposed lightweight roof of the stadium was assessed to ensure good speech intelligibility in the stadium. CSP provided detailed design advice for controlling the noise and vibrations from HVAC systems.

Early Decisions Make a Difference

It is a fact that the impact of many acoustical issues can be reduced by making appropriate early stage design decisions – site layout, building planning, materials and structures choices can all affect the magnitude and therefore cost of dealing with noise, privacy and communication issues. To help designers become more aware of the impact of acoustics on design and development CSP Acoustics is happy to provide CPD Updates on Acoustics and Noise issues to design practices and client organisations. Lunchtime, or longer, CPD sessions can be arranged for delivery in-house to suit client and design organisations.
