Acoustic design guidance has been integrated in to the overall project design, taking into account the recommendations for appropriate room acoustics and environmental noise control in schools in Building Bulletin 93 Acoustic Design of Schools: Performance Standards as balanced with other design and environmental target requirements and budgetary constraints.
The project was particularly challenging, as the school design includes a three-storey main atrium space, accommodating a number of different uses. These include a library, assembly hall, social dining and study group areas. This layout required a demanding design assessment to ensure all spaces concerned achieved suitable BB93 acoustic criteria. This was demonstrated through using three-dimensional room acoustic analysis software to model the atrium. Once modelled, this provided an effective environment to test potential solutions to control room acoustics.
