A Noise Impact Assessment for a new church was prepared by CSP Acoustics on behalf of the Church of Scotland at Monifieth.
The assessment considered the noise impact of congregations within the church and the operation of mechanical plant serving the church.
The radical design made this project one of the biggest challenges we have faced recently. The proximity to the busiest roads in Monifieth and that of other residential dwellings, made compliance with the noise criteria set by the local authority difficult. The commitment of CSP Acoustics, together with that of our client, helped to overcome these acoustic obstacles and to comply with the relevant regulations and noise criteria.
It was concluded that, subject to the implementation of suitable noise control measures established through the assessment, there was no reason why noise from the use of the church should present any impediment to the grant of planning permission for it.
Unfortunately, the proposed church development was not granted planning permission by Angus Council, on the basis that it involved the demolition of an existing building considered to be of local historic interest.

Noise Impact Assessment / Plant Noise
It is a fact that the impact of many acoustical issues can be reduced by making appropriate early stage design decisions – site layout, building planning, materials and structures choices can all affect the magnitude and therefore cost of dealing with noise, privacy and communication issues. To help designers become more aware of the impact of acoustics on design and development CSP Acoustics is happy to provide CPD Updates on Acoustics and Noise issues to design practices and client organisations. Lunchtime, or longer, CPD sessions can be arranged for delivery in-house to suit client and design organisations.
