Community Leisure Facility, Seaton Park, Arbroath

The development proposal consisted of 3G synthetic football pitches, a warm up area and an indoor hall suitable for a range of sports and activities. This proposal was of particular concern to the Local Authority, Angus Council, as the facilities would operate into the evening and potentially impact on housing surrounding Seaton Park.

Project Overview

CSP Acoustics took account of this by completing on-site survey measurements to establish the existing noise climate. Noise levels for sports activities were based on detailed sports activities for Synthetic Grass Pitches (SGPs), ascertained from prior project work. Analysis of noise impact from the development on residential properties was completed using a proprietary noise prediction software CadnaA® (Computer Aided Noise Abatement), developed by Datakustik.

The major specific challenge with the project was the lack of relevant legislation. The firm met with the local authority to discuss and agree the most appropriate method of assessing football pitch noise.

The assessment successfully demonstrated that the project was viable and the application was granted planning permission by Angus Council.

Early Decisions Make a Difference

It is a fact that the impact of many acoustical issues can be reduced by making appropriate early stage design decisions – site layout, building planning, materials and structures choices can all affect the magnitude and therefore cost of dealing with noise, privacy and communication issues. To help designers become more aware of the impact of acoustics on design and development CSP Acoustics is happy to provide CPD Updates on Acoustics and Noise issues to design practices and client organisations. Lunchtime, or longer, CPD sessions can be arranged for delivery in-house to suit client and design organisations.
